Tajinder Singh Bittu, a close aide of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, resigned from primary membership of the grand-old party on Saturday. Bittu also stepped down as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge Himachal Pradesh.

Tajinder Pal Singh Bittu tendered his resgination to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge. He wrote in the letter, “I hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress and from my post AICC, secretary Co-Incharge of Himachal Pradesh, effective immediately.”
In a Facebook post, Bittu shared his resignation letter and said, “With heavy heart , after 35 years , I resign from the Congress party.”

Sources told News 18 that Bittu is all set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday.
Bittu resignation came a day after India began voting for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The first phase of polling was held for 102 constituencies across 21 states/union territories (UTs) on Friday.

These states and UTs were – Arunachal Pradesh (two seats), Assam (five), Bihar (four), Chhattisgarh (one), Madhya Pradesh (six), Maharashtra (five), Manipur (two), Meghalaya (two), Mizoram (one), Nagaland (one), Rajasthan (12), Sikkim (one), Tamil Nadu (39), Tripura (one), Uttar Pradesh (eight), Uttarakhand (five), West Bengal (three), Andaman and Nicobar (one), Jammu and Kashmir (one), Lakshadweep (one) and Puducherry (one).

The Elections Commission of India (ECI) said that the first phase of polling was “largely peaceful across 21 States and Union Territories.” However, a few areas in West Bengal and Manipur witnessed sporadic incidents of violence and firing.
The first phase had the highest number of parliamentary constituencies among all phases. The Lok Sabha polls will be held in India in seven phases, starting from April 19 to June 1 to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The results will be announced on June 4.
